Are you planning your spring cleaning to-do list? If so, there's some things that you're likely going to overlook. Things like the heating system, plumbing system, and gutter system will all need your attention before summer kicks into high gear. Here, you'll find a few tips that'll help you get a handle on your spring cleaning to-do list.

The Furnace

Once the furnace is done heating your home for the winter, it'll need to be cleaned and ready for a summer of non-use.

If you have a gas furnace, the gas to the unit can be turned off. This will do two things for you – prevent the pilot light from accidentally going out and allowing gas to leak into your home, and prevent the waste of gas by keeping that pilot light running all summer long.

Replace the filter. If you have a central air conditioning unit, the furnace system will still work to move the air in and out of the system. A clean filter will help to boost efficiency.

Clean the fan. The fan in the furnace will attract quite a bit of dirt over the summer. Remove the front cover to access the fan. Pay close attention to any dust and dirt that is trapped around the moving parts.  A furnace repair service may be able to help you with any of the above tasks.

The Plumbing System

Now is a great time to think about having all of the drains cleaned and have the water pressure checked. If you keep up with the drain cleaning you will have fewer backups throughout the year.

Testing the water pressure at least once each year will help protect the water lines and all of the appliances that operate using water. When water pressure is too low the appliances won't get the amount of water that they need to perform properly and sediment can build up in the lines.

Clear the Gutters

The gutters play a very important role in protecting your home from moisture damage. All of the debris that has frozen and settled into the gutters must be removed before those strong summer storms come. Once the weather breaks and the sun has enough time to melt the ice that has built up in the gutters, get out there and clean them out.

These three areas are often overlooked when it comes to spring cleaning. Do your part in keeping the home in good condition by keeping up with these and all of the other important home maintenance tasks you face each year.
